Hi: My name is Jason Reed and I am the newest member of the K-State Library Team.
Position at Hale Library: I am an Assistant Professor in the Faculty & Graduate Services department working primarily with the Human Nutrition, Kinesiology, and Public Health departments. This means I am a librarian who focuses on assisting faculty and graduate students throughout the research process; though like all librarians I am happy to help anyone who has an information need.
Background: I was born in the Mountains of Western North
Carolina and I have lived in Asheville, NC
for most of my life prior to Graduate School and subsequently moving to Kansas.
Education: I started my undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I majored in Exercise and Sports Science. I transferred to the University of North Carolina at Asheville after my sophomore year and switched majors to Management. I obtained my Masters in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May 2013.
Previous Experience: I began working in a library during my junior year of college at UNC Asheville. Since then I have accumulated 7 years of progressive experience in libraries. Most recently I had an assistantship through the School of Information and Library Science at UNC Chapel Hill, where I completed 3 different rotations at the Environmental Protection Agency in Research Triangle Park and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences libraries. I worked on the reference desk at both locations and for the EPA, I also had a rotation working in Interlibrary Loan and Serials.
Link to Kansas State: Prior to my on campus interview I had never visited the State of Kansas before. I was very happy to discover that Manhattan has flint hills and is not all flat prairie lands like the Wizard of Oz.
Why Kansas State: I chose Kansas State because I the position allows me to work with the sciences, which I enjoy, and because I was intrigued by the team setup employed by the library, with this position focusing on the K-State Faculty and Graduate Students. I was also very taken with how nice everyone I encountered during my interview and with how supporting and innovative the culture at Hale Library is.
Research Interests: At this time I do not have a specific research interest that I am pursuing, rather there are a few aspects of librarianship that I am interested in. I am interested in the different approaches libraries take to create an increase level of engagement between the library and its targeted user groups, for example the Ready Player One game being run through Hale Library this semester. Additionally I am interested in how libraries market themselves to their users and targeted nonusers; people who the library wishes would take advantage of the services provided by the library. Finally, I think assessment is a vital function that all libraries should pursue to varying degrees depending on the unique circumstances facing each library.
Personal Interests: I enjoy jogging, for some reason, and have started running with the open run group sponsored by Manhattan Running Company; I have also recently joined the FFM, Functional Fitness Mobility, group operated by the Kinesiology Department here at K-State. I also enjoy participating in athletics, despite my lack of ability, including basketball, volleyball, soccer, and softball. I also enjoy playing board games, card games, and video games (mostly on the Playstation 3). Last but not least, I am a big fan of Fantasy and Science Fiction in all formats.
Conclusion: Making the decision to move to Manhattan was a big one for me, due to my lack of familiarity with the area and that my family mostly lives in North Carolina. However, so far this has been a great decision for me. I enjoy the small town atmosphere and the friendliness of the people. I believe that K-State is the right place for me to grow as a professional and as a person.
