Something to read over break

OK, we know you feel buried just trying to get through the end of the semester, but you have to believe us when we say that soon, very soon, you'll have tons of free time on your hands.  How better to spend that time than with a great book?

You can pick one up for a very low price, and keep it forever, at the Friends of the K-State Libraries' annual Holiday Book Sale this Tuesday and Wednesday in Hale Library from 9am to 4pm. 

We'll have a wide selection of gently used books of both the fiction and non-fiction varieties, spread attractively around 2nd floor near the entrance. Proceeds from the sale go to support the efforts of the Friends, who support the Libraries, who support your quest for education, so in essence, you're getting a book and paying yourself at the same time.  Who could pass up a deal like that?

Do you know a great K-State librarian? One who has gone that extra mile?

K-State Libraries are seeking nominees for the fifth annual Brice G. Hobrock Distinguished Faculty Award. The award, sponsored by Friends of the K-State Libraries, recognizes outstanding librarianship and superior accomplishments among the Libraries' faculty.

Nominations must be submitted by February 13, 2009.

Submit a nomination by completing this form. Self-nominations are welcome. The Dean and Associate Dean of the Libraries are not eligible to receive the Hobrock Award.

Eligible nominees:

• Will be evaluated based on their professional activities during the last two academic years
• Must be tenured or pre-tenured faculty holding a minimum 0.5 appointment in the Libraries, at the rank of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor
• Must have held a minimum two-year continuous appointment in the Libraries
• Must not have received the Hobrock Award during the past five years

Book sale book sale book sale!

Book sales are awesome.  Tables and tables of books that you've been meaning to read, or wanting to read, or never heard of until this moment but now must absolutely read.  And they are cheap cheap cheap!  Most can be had for less than a bottle of beer (or soda, for those of our readers who are not "of age".)

The Friends of K-State Libraries are holding their annual, no-holds barred book sale this weekend (see below for hours).  Yes, we usually hold the book sale on Open House weekend.  We're holding it a week early so that you don't have to spend any more time without those books that will bring love and meaning to your life.  Oh, and we had a conflict with the Spring Scrimmage, which is also a fundraiser for the Friends.

Better Book Sale--Monday and Tuesday

The Friends of K-State Libraries are pleased to offer one-stop shopping and studying.  If you're still catching up on the homework you didn't get done over the holiday break and haven't finished your holiday shopping, Hale Library's 2nd floor is the place to be.  Pick up a few gift books at the "better book sale," donate a few bucks and get entered for a few chances on the spiffy quilt on display, and then grab a table or computer and study.  The book sale will continue today, Monday, until 5pm and will be open tomorrow from 8am-5pm.

The Class of 2011 mindset

If you haven't read it, Beloit College has released its summary of the mindset of incoming freshmen.  It's hard for me to choose the one concept that jars with my Class of 1994 world view, so I'll choose two:

Hale Library Concert Series

Friday evening, the Friends of KSU Libraries will sponsor "An Evening of Baroque Chamber Music" as part of the Hale Library Concert Series. Performers are Robert Edwards on harpsichord, Paul Laird on baroque cello, and Joy Laird on baroque flute and alto recorder. The concert will include works by Benda, Rameau, Bigaglia, Loeillet, Boismortier and Bach.  The concert series is dedicated to Rosie Pettle, long time board memer and Past President of Friends. Corporate sponsors for this concert are Meadowlark Hills and Stoecklein Financial Services.

Friends' Holiday Bazaar

The Friends of KSU Libraries annual Holiday Bazaar will run November 26 - 29 on the second floor of Hale Library. The bazaar features great books, CDs, holiday items , and more!  Proceeds from the sale directly benefit the Libraries through Friends projects such as the purchase of the Page Family Collection, a series of diaries, letters and other papers regarding Frontier Kansas.

Friends' 1st Concert a Success

The Friends of the Libraries were delighted to host inaugural concerts on February 3rd and 10th to celebrate the restoration of the 7' Mason Hamlin concert grand piano acquired by the Friends in 2004.  The pianist was Dr. Robert Edwards, Professor Emeritus of Music.  He opened the evening playing a Schubert Fantasie in F Minor for Four Hands, with Dr. Slawomir Dobrzanski, K-State's new professor of piano. Manhattan Mercury art critic, Ben Nyberg, expressed his exceptional pleasure and privilege to be at the inaugural concert and hoped that it would be the first of many.  He went on to say the "spontaneous standing ovation for Edwards was fully earned, richly deserved".  He also praised the elegant dessert reception which followed the concert.

Both concerts were sold out and funds raised from these concerts will be directed toward maintaining the piano and providing future concerts.  Mary Ellen Titus, past president and long time Friends' board member, has been the guiding light for this activity and hopes to hold 3 to 4 concerts annually.  Different themes ranging from jazz to piano bar to opera are being considered.
