Recently, I've had two conversations about studying with two students. One student needs background noise, like the t.v., in order to concentrate while studying. One of my GPS mentees, however, perfers quiet. My answer for study space for both? Hale Library.
If you need background noise (sorry, no t.v.) Hale's second floor is THE best place on campus. There's always a buzz of students chatting, studying, rehearsing presentations, and quizzing each other. And with our new furniture, you can try a booth, a traditional large study table, or mix-and-match the tables, chairs, and white boards on the west end of the room for your every study need.
If you need quiet, try the Great Room (you may also know it as the Harry Potter Room) on Hale's 3rd floor. Not only is this the oldest part of the library, it's also the most library part of the library. We've designated the Great Room for quiet, individual study. The Great Room is home to four historical murals. Occasionally, tour groups, events, or restoration work may disturb the quiet.
Others have discovered their own quiet study places. There are nooks and crannies on first, third, and fourth floor that can offer peace and quiet depending on the time of day, day of the week, and what you consider quiet enough. So if the 2nd floor is too loud, but the Great Room is too quiet, explore! If you're willing, leave a comment with your favorite study space.
If you've been at K-State for a few years, you may have noticed that the quiet study zones have shifted from time-to-time. We've discovered that, ironically, there is no purely quiet place in the library. For instance, while the Great Room is mostly quiet, man, does it echo! So, we've made adjustments based on student feedback. However, we'd really like to work with students to establish more permanent study areas in the library. If you are at all interested in working with us on this project, please let me know (skearns @ k-state. edu). We're at the very start of planning, so I honestly don't know when we'll meet (or start meeting) and how exactly this will work. But, if you let me know you're interested, I'll let you know when plans are in place!
