What if the Earth Stood Still?

When my cousin's oldest son was just a tiny tot, she taught him to say "centrifugal force" because he asked her why he leaned in his car seat when they went up a steep onramp to the highway. (This is the kind of thing that happens when engineers have children.)  Now I always hear his 2 year old voice saying "It's centriffical fors, mommy!" when I see the phrase.  Like today, when I saw it in the subtitle to this fascinating article about what would happen if the Earth stopped spinning.

I would like to apologize to the library managers and supervisors and directors of every library person who reads this blog. I'm about to reduce your work productivity for, say, the next 15 minutes. The real person to blame is the Old Spice guy, but no one is going to yell at him, so I'll shoulder the blame. That's what happens when the Old Spice guy, as part of what is a blatant advertising ploy, creates personalized messages for a bunch of folks, including someone who asked for a message about libraries.

Happy 4th of July! Check out our holiday hours

If you somehow forget, despite the Black Cats cracking and Saturn Missiles screaming in the sky, Sunday is the 4th of July! The Libraries will be closed Sunday and Monday, July 5th, in observation of the holiday. The 24 Hour Study Area on the 1st floor of Hale will remain open. Whoops! We're having some work done, so the 24 Hour Study Area will be closed the 5th-11th. K-State students, faculty, and staff will be able to access other computer labs on campus.

Hale will reopen at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6th.

8 minutes, 58 seconds. That's how long it took for me to listen to the Declaration of Independence this morning. Conveniently, that's how long it will take you to listen to it, too.

The original document may be faded after 234 years, but the words are still clear.
