More Synergy Blackwell & Wiley Interscience link news

My last news about the three-way intersection of Get It, Synergy Blackwell, and Wiley Interscience wasn't so good. URL redirects that travel through Get It failed to immediately retrieve the article. Instead, users were taken to the Wiley Interscience home page.

I love the SFX listserv, SFX-DISCUSS-L, because its members actually fix stuff - even for this ornery linking-level problem. I've implemented her fix and it works, so I have to shout a huge THANK YOU to Inga Overkamp at the Max Planck Digital Library in Munich.

Inga's fix involves modifying a tiny bit of the code that Get It uses to take the user from a citation to full-text. With this (temporary) patch in place, citations that offer Synergy Blackwell as a target will, when the user chooses Synergy Blackwell in the Get It menu, resolve to the full-text article in Wiley Interscience. Try it here. Please note that this will only work with an article citation. When you have a journal title only (such as when using the E-Journals list), choosing Synergy Blackwell in the Get It menu will still take you to the Wiley Interscience home page.

Synergy Blackwell links redirect to Wiley Interscience (sort of)

The transition of e-journals from Synergy Blackwell to Wiley Interscience seems to have gone smoothly, with a few exceptions. Links that use the Synergy Blackwell syntax are redirecting to Wiley Interscience, but the links provided by Get It only redirect to the Wiley Interscience home page. You are probably used to Get It linking you to the journal itself or to the specific article you're looking for. According to Wiley, that functionality should be restored in a few days. Finding an article in the Wiley interface currently takes some patience and a lot of clicking.

Synergy Blackwell, Wiley Interscience downtime

Ejournals formerly accessed through the Synergy Blackwell interface are moving to the Wiley Interscience interface. This transition will occur over the weekend of June 28-29, and will involve some downtime. Synergy Blackwell is scheduled to shut down on Friday, June 27; it is possible that ejournals accessible from Synergy Blackwell will not be available on this day. If you need an item that is not available and that we do not have in print, please place an Interlibrary Loan request.

Wiley Interscience will be offline from 4:00am CDT Saturday, June 28 until 8:00pm CDT Sunday, June 29. When Wiley Interscience comes back online, Synergy Blackwell ejournals will be available from Wiley Interscience. Wiley is redirecting all Synergy Blackwell URLs to their new locations, so access to these titles via Get It or your personal bookmarks should be unaffected once the downtime is completed. On Monday, June 30, we will be testing the access to Synergy Blackwell ejournals via Get It to confirm that they are working. Any updates will be posted to this blog.

Haworth Journals - Update

All Haworth journals are currently inaccessible.  The entire website has been placed behind a password wall, and their tech support has gone home for the day.  Look for updates tomorrow, and refer patrons to print versions whenever possible.

Update 5/1 - All seems to be well today.  I haven't heard from anyone at Haworth, but the site is functioning normally.

JSTOR - log in from on campus - REPAIRED

Update: This problem is fixed. You should be able to use the Databases page's JSTOR link without logging in from on campus.

4/14/08:
JSTOR's new interface, a new configuration for JSTOR's EZproxy stanza, some questionable IP recognition, and a strange cookie have conspired against us in a novel and creative way.

For the moment, on-campus users of JSTOR are being asked to log in when clicking the link from the Databases page. I have contacted JSTOR support to find an answer or a fix.

In the meantime, JSTOR will work if you take that painful step of logging in with your eID and password. I know it's annoying, and I apologize. Please know we're working as quickly as we can to solve the problem.

Google appliance undergoing upgrades

I'm applying system upgrades to the Google appliance today. Typically, these barely interrupt the services provided by the box, but apparently this upgrade is more involved than most (from 4.x to 5.x), and it appears that there will be windows of time where the appliance will not respond.

This should all be resolved within a couple of hours of this post.
