Vanderbilt Television News Archive

Did you ever wish you could re-run news broadcasts of important events - to remember where you were, or perhaps to see for yourself the stuff that's in your history book? Now you can. Vanderbilt University has been recording news broadcasts since 1968 - nightly news, special coverage, and other programs. K-State Libraries now has access to a database of this material. In the Vanderbilt Television News Archive, you can watch news programs about many of the key events that have shaped our country and our culture, including:

  • Student unrest at Columbia University (1968)
  • Watergate Congressional hearings (1973)
  • Peace talks and treaty between Egypt and Israel (1978-1979)
  • Space shuttle Challenger explosion (1986)
  • Persian Gulf War (1991)
  • Contested presidential election (2000)

For reasons of copyright, the Archive can't put all their recordings online. They can, however, compile and send to you a videotape of broadcasts or segments that aren't online. The Archive charges for this service in half-hour units. You'll need to create a personal account to place orders and read more details about the service.

Scirus now Gets It

After delays caused by various technical difficulties, we've now enabled the Get It button in Scirus. Scirus is a science-specific search engine that applies your search term(s) to journal articles and Web sources. Not familiar with Scirus, but think it might be useful? Read more about it.

It's not as easy in Scirus as in many of our other search interfaces to see the Get It button. You have to tell Scirus you want it. Once you do so, Scirus will remember your choice until you switch computers or your browser deletes its cookies. I've included a few screenshots to get you started.

CiNii Free

SFX now has more than 2000 active portfolios to free full-text content from CiNii. So what is this CiNii?

According to the site's "About" section, "CiNii (Scholarly and Academic Information Navigator) is a database service that enables searching of information on academic papers published in academic society journals or university research bulletins, or included in the National Diet Library's Japanese Periodicals Index Database."

Much of the free content dates back to the 1950s. The articles originate from Japanese academic journals, societies, and university research bulletins. They cover a wide variety of intellectual content, including Agriculture, Medicine, Economics and Engineering.

To see the items available from CiNii, choose the Locate tab in the E-Journals list. Leaving all other fields blank, pull down the "Vendor" menu and choose "CiNii". Click GO and browse the service's list of titles.

New Interface for Biological Abstracts

The next time you use Biological Abstracts, it's going to look a little different. This very useful database for life sciences, natural sciences, and veterinary medicine is now associated with the Web of Knowledge platform. You may look at this interface and think, "This is Web of Science!" You'd be partly right.

The Web of Knowledge platform now supports Food Science and Technology Abstracts, CAB Abstracts, Biological Abstracts, and Web of Science (which includes Social Sciences Citation Index, Science Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index).

If you even think you might need assistance with Biological Abstracts' new look or with any of our databases, send your subject librarian a call for help. Too rushed? Contact the Hale Library Help Desk using your favorite form of communication - IM, email, telephone, or face-to-face.

ScienceDirect

K-State Libraries has expanded your access to ScienceDirect! You can now view full text from 2002 forward for 335 leading journals in scientific, medical and technical subjects. The Get It service will take you to ScienceDirect journals in the course of your research, especially if you are starting at a scientifically-oriented resource such as Web of Science.

You can take advantage of some of ScienceDirect's cool features by registering for a personal account. You don't need to do this to access full text. It's convenient, however, if you'd like to:

  • Receive alerts via email or RSS feed about topics that interest you
  • Save and re-use searches
  • Mark and watch favorite journals
  • Personalize your ScienceDirect interface

Contact your subject librarian if you have questions about these features. Not sure who your subject librarian is? Check here.
