Students in several sections of American Ethnic Studies 160 will begin
their personal ethnography paper soon, so expect some questions from
them. The library portion of their assignment is to find information on
the culture/history of their own ethnic groups. To help you help them,
here are some of the places you can point them to:
1. The
American Ethnic Studies Subject Guide. There is an
AES 160 class page which gives them a list of useful databases and books. The library portion of the assignment is also posted there to give you a better idea of what they are looking for.
2. The Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America (in
Gale Virtual Reference Library)
is a great resource for this assignment. Type in their ethnicity (e.g.
German) and hit search, and they should find a good introductory
article, with more sources at the bottom.
3.
Credo Reference is another good place.4.
DowMRC website's
Browse Book Database
has a lot of good reference books for this class. The students can
"browse" the collection. I have written a Short Cuts blog entry on how
to use the database, which will be posted soon. If their prof. asks them to find materials from
the DowMRC, just point the students to the Browse Book Database.
5. Some students may have to find recipes for their assignment. They can find cookbooks in the
DowMRC Database. I have also make a
list of relevant cookbooks
for them (in the reference section of the subject guide), including a
couple of ebooks. Finally, Special Collections have a huge collection
of cookbooks.
6. Some students may have to use a primary source database, such as
North American Immigrant Letters, Diaries, and Oral Histories. The best way to use it is to use the Browse tab (instead of Search). Click on Browse, and then select
"Nationality and Cultural Heritage", and you should see a list of nationalities.
If you have any questions, feel free to refer the student to me.
Thanks!
