Referral Marketing campaigns: “slashdotting” digital library resources
J. Buczynski (Seneca Univ)
Crowds are not coming to our digital libraries (digital in the broad sense: database, ejournals + digital content)
There is an awareness gap when 1% of searches start with library.
Digital library as place is not working: resources need to be where people are online rather than go through our front door
Directing traffic to little known web sites (also known as “slashdotting”) -
see http://slashdot.org
Word of Mouth (WOM) = referral marketing
Only 20% of WOM happens online: face to face still matters
Make it easier for WOM
Find places for the conversation: blogs, websites, syndication (this is the “Slashdot effect”)
Little bloggers with small audience, have a ripple effect
Need to do it strategically
Everything today is a digital library: difficult to communicate
Where to start with WOM marketing: highest usage? low usage? Uniqueness? Non-text? New?
Presenter talks to his bibliographers about low use items and encourages using WOM to get info into their conversations and classes to build usage
Set goals and objectives
Promote the benefits, not the tool
Use "Tell-a-friend" email forms
Give out vendor swags/tote bags to faculty and students - these generate conversations - "where'd you get that cool [fill in vendor/product name] bag?"
