Dissertation or Dissertation Abstracts
Margery Tibbets
California Digital Library
Problem:
-MLA, PsycINFO citations are for Dissertation Abstracts citations
-Users want the dissertation
-At UC, the problem was identified by ILL staff
Systems impacted:
-ILL/doc delivery
-OPAC holdings
-full text (PQDT)
Some solutions:
Create a local target for Dissertation Abstracts (if no subscription to PQDT)
Create a local target for genre=dissertation
Modify SFX to process article OpenURLs as dissertations instead of articles
Local target for Dissertation Abstracts:
-service type - full text, abstracts
-use bulk parser
-create Web page for help; jkey=url for this page
Changing articles to dissertations:
CDL negotiated w/ Ovid and CSA to get relevant info into OpenURL - admits CDL/UC has more leverage than some libraries, but encourages all to try.
Gives a list of SFX modules impacted; modified CSA and Ovid source parsers to include the dissertation number (this is what she negotiated for). Does this for the UC document delivery and OPAC targets. RE negotiations, points out that once the vendor changes the OpenURL for CDL/UC, it's changed for everyone.
Article to dissertation - remove ISSN, references to Dissertation Abstracts, genre=article, insert dissertation number, change year to date dissertation is referenced in DA.
Also tweaked the PQDT target parser to use the Dissertation number in the URL; remove the date from the URL, since it's generally off by one year; truncate the title; some other normalizations.
Her link text is "Abstract or full text available from PQDT" since they only get full text from a certain date forward.
Both these talks were so useful in getting me back on track toward finishing this project!
Excellent! Glad to see this get some daylight at ELUNA.
