ER&L 2008: E-Resources Management

Luiz H. Mendes
Electronic Resources Librarian
CSU Northridge

"E-Resources Management: so many silos to synchronize...still!"

Assumptions:
-E-Resources management is still a complex and daunting task distributed among too many data containers (silos)
-Despite development of streamlined workflows, still redundant and duplicate data entry (synchronization)
-Despite technical developments, only partially integrated systems and approaches (integration)
-E-resources management needs to be more automated (automation)

Initial questions:
-Is there a more integrated approach to e-resources management?
-Should the ultimate goal of e-resources management be to minimize the number of silos?

Current Landscape:
-Systems & tools:
ILS, OPAC, ERM, Link resolver, E-resources data supplier, fed search tool
-Standards:
data structures (ONIX), data exchange (ONIX SOH, CORE), usage data (COUNTER, SUSHI), Licenses (ERMI2, ONIX-PL, SERU), general system standards (data elements, workflows, etc)
-Data providers:
MARC subscription services, MARC records from publishers and vendors, Records from KB (CONSER records for e-journals, proposal for provider-neutral records, e-book aggregations)

More questions:
What are some criteria to pursue a more integrated approach?
What local solutions could be implemented to integrate?

At Cal State, heavy reliance on David Walker for data extraction/conversion:
-from SFX into III ERM format
-create direct linking to send users directly from catalog to vendor's site via OpenURL (catalog as a source)

Corollary effects:
Integration is a cause for rethinking acquired systems and services
Look for systems that relate and have extraction/importing of  data
Selection of services, systems, products based on integration and interoperability?
Do more with less in fewer silos.
