Kevin Champion knew he wanted to work in a library, but wasn't sure exactly where. As it turns out, there may be no better fit than Reference Generalist at the Dow MRC. Multicultural studies are a huge part of Kevin's background, having dual majored in Spanish and Anthropology, with secondary majors in International and Latin American Studies, and minors in Philosophy and Political Science. By comparison, I studied Theatre, just Theatre, and still took five years to graduate. I think we can safely say my drive and ambition just got pwnd.
Kevin joined us here at K-State Libraries and the MRC as of May 14th. Although this is his first foray into library employment, Kevin is no stranger to these hallowed halls (if that weren't obvious from the extent of his studies). Surrounded by knowledge, the library is the perfect environment for Kevin to continue pursuing his studies. The half-time appointment works well for him as it also leaves time for his other pursuits. What other pursuits exactly? I'm glad you asked.
Kevin has a strong interest in Students for Environmental Action, a group at K-State intent on saving the planet. Independently of SEA, but with them in mind, Kevin created an online community, generating a space for this group of many busy people to collaborate despite their hectic schedules. You can check it out yourself here. Sounds like a lot, right? We're not done yet.
Kevin has also been working on a Buyers Guide for Manhattan, focusing on conscientious consumerism (the social impact and ethical concerns surrounding what you buy. I know, I know, I was also shocked to learn that major for profit organizations don't always have society's best interests at heart). The above link takes you to some info about the guide, and the guide itself will eventually be at http://manhattanbuyersguide.blogspot.com/, although the site is currently under construction. This endevor came about in part through his other job at Chipotle. Chipotle has made some great efforts already to improve their organization, and Kevin has been working on making greater changes by building on their already socially conscious value set. We're still not done.
Kevin originally came to K-State to study Ceramics (which on the sensibility scale is up there around, oh, let's say Theatre) and since graduating last year, he's had time to set up his own studio. Yoga is also a big part of Kevin's life, and has set up a studio for that as well. Seriously, Kevin, quit raising the bar. I can't even find time to make it to the gym.
Kevin has two brothers you might see around campus. His younger brother, Sam, is currently a junior in Psychology, and older brother Ben will soon be teaching Geography.
